Sunrisers get top seeding, open playoffs
The Sunrisers/Island Apparel will be seeded first in the playoffs of the 2nd Domino Lux International Fraternity Basketball Invitational Friendship League and will battle the last qualifier SCS Heavy Equipment at the start of the quarterfinals on Monday at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
The Sunrisers-SCS quarterfinal match at 6:30pm will be the first playoff game to be played this season as the league took a weeklong break after completing the round-robin elimination. In the second game at 8pm, Mobil Smiles will take on Andhok’s Grille.
The Jawn Joyner-led Sunrisers took the No. 1 seeding after finishing the regular season with a 7-2 record, beating Mobil in the tiebreak. Mobil, which won its last and make-up game in the elimination against defending champion Blue Haus, 120-111, lost in the tiebreak as it bowed to the Sunrisers in their lone meeting in the regular season, 77-80.
Blue Haus with its loss at the hands of Mobil in the extra five minutes of their controversial game dropped to third with a 6-3 record and will be playing the resurging Shirley’s Coffee Shop on Wednesday at 6:30pm.
Shirley’s was ranked sixth in the eight-team playoffs with its 4-5 record behind QQ Car Rental and Crystal Pure, which had similar 5-4 slates and will be playing in the last quarterfinal game also on Wednesday at 8pm. Crystal Pure got its fifth win last week after downing SCS, 77-69.
Andhok’s Grille and SCS claimed the last two playoff berths after prevailing in the quotient system. The two squads tied Hite Beer/Blue for seventh to ninth place with their identical 3-6 marks, but the latter was eliminated as it lost both to Andhok’s and SCS in the regular season. Joining Hite Beer in the showers was Smart Cagers/Ali’i, which only had a 2-7 mark.
Winners of the quarterfinals pairings will advance to the semis on April 13, while the one-game finals will be played next Saturday, April 14.
