SSC hosts invitational meet, ocean swim
Saipan Swim Club will have its hands full next week, as it hosts races for three days.
The first two days, April 13 and 14, will be for the 2012 International Invitational Meet at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool with various swim clubs from Guam coming over to Saipan to compete in the annual event.
Next Friday’s competition will be held in the afternoon, while Saturday’s events are divided into two sessions. Events scheduled for Friday afternoon are the 1,500m freestyle and 200m backstroke for the 11-and-above age group, 200m freestyle for U10, and the 50m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, and 200m medley relay for all ages. For the Saturday races, events set for the morning session include the 200m and 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley for the 11-and-above age group and the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, and 100m backstroke for all age groups. For the afternoon session, swimmers will compete in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 200m IM, and 200m freestyle relay (for all ages), 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly (the 11-and-above age group), and 400m freestyle (9-and-above).
Swimmers joining the two-day competition will earn points based on how they will finish in each event and at the end of the contest, the Top 3 in each age group will receive trophies. Last year’s invitational meet drew 60 swimmers from the host, Tsunami Saipan, and Guam’s Manukai Athletic Club and Tarakito Swim Club.
From the Marpi pool, swimmers will head to the waters near World Resort in Susupe where the famous partially submerged World War II tanks are located for the 34th Annual SSC Ocean Swim.
The ocean swim set for April 15 will have four races: 600m, 1 kilometer, 1.3km, and 2.5km. Swimmers are also allowed to use fins, buoys, paddles, or snorkels. Races start at 8am, while registration begins at 7am. Registration fee paid on or before April 9 is only $15 and $20 after the early bird registration date. Medals will be awarded to the Top 3 finishes in each races.
