Notorious robber gets two years in prison
Notorious ex-convict Ramon Cabrera Blas pleaded guilty yesterday to a robbery case that occurred at the Kingfisher Golf Course in Talafofo last year and was slapped with a two-year prison term.
Blas pleaded guilty to theft as part of a plea deal.
Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman sentenced the 52-year-old Blas to five years in prison, all suspended except for two years, with credit for time served.
Wiseman earlier rejected two proposed plea deals entered by Blas and the Office of the Attorney General for being “too lenient.” The first plea bargain recommended a three-month jail term, while the second proposed a six-month prison term.
In accepting the plea agreement, Wiseman told Blas that he is already in his 50’s and should stop his career as a criminal.
“You’re not good in what you’re doing! You always get caught! Stop committing these stupid crimes!” the judge told Blas.
Although stupid, these crimes have repercussions or consequences to the community, especially to tourists, Wiseman said.
After completing his sentence, Blas will be placed on three years of probation. He was also required to pay a $1,000 fine, $100 court assessment fee, to perform 200 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the victim, Zhu Yu Shun.
According to the plea agreement, Blas approached Shun and her three friends on Oct. 26, 2011, at the King Fisher Golf Resort, got into the tourists’ golf cart and drove off with it into the jungle, taking two of the ladies’ handbags and all of the contents. The contents included a Coach wallet with $349 in cash, a Galaxy cell phone, car keys, house keys, a First Hawaiian Bank Continental Smile Card, and a make-up container.
Assistant attorney general Nicole D. Driscoll appeared for the government at the hearing. Assistant public defender Douglas Hartig served as counsel for Blas.
In rejecting the second plea agreement, Wiseman noted that Blas has had numerous cases that included a multitude of charges filed against him, which resulted in no less than 13 criminal convictions. These convictions resulted in sentences that totaled 44 years and nine months.
The judge said most of the sentences were suspended, having Blas serving about 11 years out of that and the rest on probation.
“His release from jail only results in him committing more crimes and continuously placing members of our society in danger,” Wiseman said.
Police arrested Blas last Oct. 27 shortly after the robbery at Kingfisher Golf Course. Blas fled on foot toward the cliffline and walked toward Jeffrey’s Beach where responding police officers arrested him. The officers recovered the victims’ money.
