Judge OKs bail for 2 GES burglary suspects
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo reduced yesterday the $5,000 cash bail for two Division of Sports and Recreation employees who are suspected of carting off more than $6,000 worth of equipment from the Garapan Elementary School.
Suspect John B. Reyes Jr., deputy director of the Division of Sports and Recreation, was allowed to post $1,000 cash bail and $4,000 in unsecured or appearance bond.
His co-defendant, division staff Mario O. Sablan, was allowed to post $625 cash and $4,375 in unsecured or appearance bond.
The third-party custodian for the 34-year-old Reyes is his father, former Department of Public Works secretary Juan S. Reyes Sr.
The third-party custodian for 35-year-old Sablan is his mother, Gregoria Olopai.
Attorney Stephen C. Woodruff, counsel for Reyes, said that his client is not a flight risk, has strong family ties on Saipan, has no criminal history, and is gainfully employed. Woodruff requested a $500 cash bail and an unsecured bond for the $4,500 remainder.
Assistant public defender Daniel Guidotti, counsel for Sablan, moved the court to release his client to his mother after posting a $500 cash.
In the government’s opposition to modify bail, assistant attorney general Shelli Neal said the bail amount of $5,000 cash is less than the value of the items stolen from GES.
Second, Neal said, the nature of this crime is one that requires a significant amount of bail to deter these defendants from committing similar crimes.
Police arrested Reyes and Sablan Friday night after being tagged as responsible for the burglary at several classrooms and storage rooms at GES on March 25, 2012.
