The long-time manager of the Rota International Airport and seaport was fired yesterday from his position without cause.

Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero confirmed with Saipan Tribune that he sent a letter yesterday to Thomas Manglona to inform him of the termination of his employment contract effective after 30 days, or by May 9.

Manglona is the brother of Senate President Paul A. Manglona, who is currently engaged in a word war with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial.

Deleon Guerrero described his letter to Manglona as self-explanatory and declined to further comment on the issue.

He explained, however, that a manager’s contract includes a provision that allows termination with or without cause. The 30-day notice, he said, is to allow for the smooth transition of responsibilities.

As of yesterday, no replacement has been named for Thomas Manglona yet.

Thomas Manglona himself had nothing but praise yesterday for CPA, saying he respects the management’s decision.

Manglona began serving as airport and seaport manager in 2006. He has about 20 personnel under his watch for both airport and seaport.

Manglona believes that substantial improvements were accomplished at both the Rota airport and seaport during his tenure.

“I really thanked CPA for giving me the opportunity to serve our people for less than seven years. I am grateful that for those years, we were able to bring progress and improvements in both our airport and seaports here,” Manglona said.

When asked if his termination is related to his brother’s political differences with the governor, Manglona said he has no idea and he has full respect for the governor.

Manglona’s contract was just renewed last month, along with the employment contracts of other managers on Saipan and Tinian.
