Assateague partners with Saipan Coast Guard Auxiliary

Members of the Saipan Auxiliary Flotilla recently had an opportunity to climb aboard the Coast Guard cutter Assateague to train alongside their active duty counterparts.
Last year marked the re-establishment of the Saipan Flotilla in the CNMI, making it the newest full-fledged flotilla in the Pacific region.
Since its re-establishment, the flotilla’s new memberships and training needs continue to grow.
“Auxiliarists serve as the resident experts of safe boating in their communities. This expertise starts with training our members first so they can apply these lessons learned in their interactions with the boating public [on] Saipan,” said Dennis Chapla, Saipan flotilla commander.
Crew from the cutter Assateague spent the day with Saipan Auxiliarists training in boat handling, navigation, and other seamanship skills. This will be the first of many trips from Coast Guard units home ported in Guam to Saipan to assist the flotilla with their training needs.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the uniformed civilian all-volunteer component of Team Coast Guard, assists the active-duty Coast Guard in many of its varied missions. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in the air, in classrooms, and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks, and public education.
