Leo Manibusan appointed to Merchant Marine Academy
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo said yesterday that Guam resident Leo Peter Kashihara Manibusan has been appointed to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
Manibusan was nominated by Bordallo and competed with nominees nationwide for admission to the Merchant Marine Academy. The USMMA admission board selected Manibusan based on his academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.
Manibusan is the son of Peter and Reiko Kashihara Manibusan of Mongmong, Guam, and is currently a senior at Father Duenas Memorial School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, FDMS Student Council, and the FDMS Rugby team. In 2011, Manibusan received a scholarship from the Department of the Interior to represent FDMS in the Junior States of America Summer School at Stanford University. He also received the highest individual score in the University of Guam’s Chemistry Titration Competition. Manibusan is an active volunteer in the Nuestra Senora Delas Aguas Church and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam.
“I congratulate Leo and his proud parents, Peter and Reiko Manibusan, on his appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy,” said Bordallo. “Leo is a highly motivated student and is well prepared for the challenges of the Merchant Marine Academy. I wish him the best in his academic endeavors, and I am confident that he will succeed at the Merchant Marine Academy when he enters with the class of 2016.” (PR)
