NCD community forum on Tinian
The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Division of Public Health would like to inform the Tinian community that a forum on non-communicable diseases will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Fleming Conference Room.
The forum, like those recently held on the island of Saipan, will touch on issues of non-communicable diseases and associated risk factors that are the most common causes of disability and death of our people. This epidemic of NCDs is directly linked to four risk factors—poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol abuse. NCDs are lifestyle related, and for the most part, preventable.
The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation’s Division of Public Health recognizes that NCDs are not only an epidemic, but a true public health emergency. In spite of our efforts to date, this epidemic has steadily become worse.
The most effective response to NCD’s will come from the community, and that a “whole of society” approach is needed. For this reason, the Tinian community is urged to attend the community forum, which will allow for open discussion and sharing of ideas on how to effectively combat NCDs in our islands.
The forum is open to the general public and everyone is called upon to help fight against NCDs in the CNMI. Similar forums on Rota will follow in the coming weeks.
