MMAC Committee’s Note: As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Marianas March Against Cancer, the 2012 MMAC committee would like to honor and recognize the efforts of our teams for their untiring support in the fight against cancer.

The Northern Marianas Protection & Advocacy Systems, Inc. or NMPASI is the Commonwealth’s designated protection and advocacy system operating with the mission “to protect the civil, legal, and human interests of individuals with disabilities.”

The agency is forming a team for the 2012 Marianas March Against Cancer, which is composed of employees, board of directors, Protection & Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness or PAIMI council, and their families.

Many of the members of Team NMPASI will be involved for the first time in the annual Marianas March Against Cancer event next month, although their former executive director became active in the past, according to team captain Greg Borja.

Borja said that among NMPASI’s annual goals is for its programs “to disseminate information relating to the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities to the community at large, including fact sheets and brochures, during events held in collaboration with other organizations.”

“MMAC works with a group of people who have disabling conditions, so it was natural to collaborate with them by participating in this event,” he explained.

Asked about their tent activities during the event slated for April 27 to 28, Borja said, “We will show some short videos about disability awareness, we will hand out informational brochures, and we have activities that teach teambuilding and problem solving.”

Their favorite part of the event, Borja said, is working with other community members.

“We’re still new to this, so I say talk to people who are already involved with the event and jump in feet first. If you don’t have a big team, collaborate with and join with others who are also trying to form a team,” Borja advised those who are considering forming a MMAC team.
