Emergency Preparedness Fair this Saturday
Just a year ago this month, Japan was hit by the devastating Tohohu tsunami. Lives were lost and there was much disruption to normal life. How can we prepare ourselves for the unexpected to happen, for natural disasters that could occur or for illnesses or job loss? While Sendai was reeling from the effects of this huge underwater earthquake, Red Cross warnings were put out all the way to North and South America. The Pacific Islands were warned that some smaller islands could be completely covered by waves that an earthquake this size would cause.
With the concern that we all have for the well-being of ourselves and for our families, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, is pulling the resources and talents of its members to teach to the Saipan community emergency preparedness skills at an Emergency Preparedness Fair this Saturday, March 31, from 8am to noon.
“Whether it be improving job training and resume strength, keeping a financial reserve, knowing how to navigate a natural disaster, or storing sufficient food and necessities in your home, preparedness is an important theme in self-reliance. To successfully pass through difficult times using one’s own resources is not only an asset to the individual and family, but also extends to strengthen communities,” said Dirk Tanner, chairman of the Fair.
The eight topics to be covered in 30-minute classes repeated five times throughout the morning are: food storage and preservation, 72-hour kits, first aid and first aid kits, education and job training and advancement skills, important documents to store, natural and local disaster preparedness, financial preparedness, and spiritual strength in trials.
“When individuals are living in a self-reliant manner, not only will the burden of dependence on government and charity lessen, but self-confidence and satisfaction can increase, and there can be a greater inner peace in each individual and family, knowing that you are prepared to face and survive difficulties and trials that may arise,” said Tanner.
All who are interested are invited to attend for part or all of the morning. Child care will be provided on site and there will be refreshments available. (PR)
