Zoning staff and board members are set to convene next week to work on their next course of action after a local bill that proposed massive changes to the Saipan Zoning Law of 2008 was vetoed last Thursday.

Acting Zoning administrator Therese T. Ogumoro said yesterday that their meeting is scheduled on April 4.

“Although our agenda has been published already, I’m sure we will be discussing this development during the meeting,” Ogumoro told Saipan Tribune.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial vetoed last Thursday House Local Bill 17-26, authored by Rep. Stanley Torres (Ind-Saipan), which would have rezoned 29 areas on Saipan.

Asked for her comment on the governor’s action, Ogumoro said, “I’m happy that the bill was vetoed by the governor. I’m happy knowing that it’s the right thing for our island.”

“As for our next move, we’re waiting to see what happens after this,” she added.

Ogumoro noted that they are prepared with their comments and reports should the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation request their presence in a meeting to discuss the zoning amendments.
