The Saipan Chamber of Commerce said yesterday that its 2012 SCC Scholarship Awards applications are now available for all future 2012 graduating high school students who meet criteria for those annual Chamber awards.

Five high school students will receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship award to an accredited public or private institution of higher learning. The scholarships are awarded for tuition, books, education fees, and living expenses.

Applicants are reviewed and judged by a panel of Chamber members who evaluate and scale a variety of criteria, including academic achievement, leadership in school activities, commitment to community, character and grade point average.

Criteria used to award the scholarship recipients:

– You must be enrolled as a senior in a secondary school on Saipan.

– You must show proof of acceptance to a college, university, or vocational school of your choice.

– You must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the time of application.

– You must have completed either the SAT or ACT College entrance exams and submit your scores.

– You must submit letters of recommendation from two persons, and one should be from a business employer or an educator.

– You must complete a personal interview with the Chamber’s Education Committee.

– You must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on the topic: “How I will use my education to improve the CNMI.”

The deadline for submitting applications and material to the Chamber office is Friday, April 27, 2012, at 5pm. Scholarships will be awarded on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the Chamber general membership meeting. Applications are available with high school counselors, or at the Chamber office.
