Repeal Article 12: The alternative to casinos

The strongest proponents for the legalization of casinos in the Northern Mariana Islands feel strongly that casinos will solve the islands’ problems. Proponents of casinos have often asked the community to either join them in supporting the gambling industry or to give alternative suggestions that will save our islands from economic ruin which they believe only casinos can do.

The people of the CNMI have repeatedly rejected the legalization of casinos in the CNMI and tourists have not indicated gambling as a top reason for coming to the islands, further validating the notion that gambling is not the solution. One thing we can agree on, however, is that the CNMI needs investors.

The alternative to casinos is to make the CNMI a place that investors want to come to. Investors will only come if they know it is safe to make an investment here. Repealing Article 12 will do just that. Resolving the issues of landownership can make it inviting for investors to consider buying the old dilapidated garment factories and abandoned buildings that may have 20 years remaining on their leases. As it is now, these unsightly buildings will remain for many years to come. Our laws deter investments as no one will put serious money into a property they cannot own.

Repealing Article 12 opens doors for many winning solutions that will not only bring in much needed tax dollars but will also add to the aesthetics of our islands. Let’s make sure our tourists are well taken care of and that when they drive around the islands they will notice not only the natural beauty but the beautiful neighborhoods, stores, restaurants and other establishments. We have viable government agencies such as the Zoning Board, the Department of Public Works, and Department of Environmental Quality that will help ensure quality projects.

Repealing Article 12 is an alternative to casinos in the CNMI and opens doors to endless possibilities.
