The Benchwarmers took the solo lead in the Rocball league after winning the battle of unbeaten teams last week at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

According to Saipan Rocball creator and league coordinator James Feger, the Benchwarmers juiced-out Local Motion, 42-31. A juiced-out victory is awarded to team that had the lead at the end of the regulation and also won the fourth set of the match.

The Benchwarmers also prevailed in the opening set of their duel against Local Motion, 12-4, to gain early momentum. Local Motion fought back in the second set with a 13-8 win to move within three, 17-20, and then grabbed the upper hand, 29-28, after another victory in the third set, 12-8. However, Local Motion failed to complete the come-from-behind win, as the Benchwarmers regrouped and took an emphatic 14-3 victory in the fourth and final set.

Despite losing the game, Local Motion had a sort of consolation as its top player—A.J. Seman—was named the heavy hitter of the match. Seman scored 16 points off six aces and two backcourt plays.

Thirteen aces, eight kees, and one goal were scored in the Benchwarmer-Local Motion tussle.

With the Benchwarmers winning, they improved to a 6-0 record. Local Motion settled for the second spot with its 5-1 mark, while the Veterans rounded out the Top 3 in the team standings with its 4-2 slate. Completing the field are Oba Squirt and the Teacher, which are tied for fourth and fifth, IDGU and Mix, which are also in a standoff for sixth to seventh place, and cellar dweller Nameless.

In related Rocball news, the Rocball Federation of India, which is affiliated with Saipan Rocball, has scheduled the National Senior Men and Women’s Rocball Tournament for Dec. 26 and 27. (Saipan Tribune)
