Benavente prods action on bill to fund paving of Obyan Road
Rep. Roman Benavente (Ind-Saipan) hopes a bill he wrote to fund the paving of impassable roads in Obyan would move out of the committee soon.
Benavente said he introduced the bill on Jan. 30, and has checked with the Department of Finance on the availability of the funds in Business units 4961M and 4961N.
“This is a need,” Benavente told Saipan Tribune yesterday.
House Local Bill 19-05 would appropriate $780,000 in lapsed funds from Saipan Local No. 18-17. Benavente said the bill has been sitting in the committee and has not been entertained.
A total of $360,000 goes to the paving of Obyan Road; 40,000 for the repair and upgrade of the San Antonio Youth Center; $30,000 for the repair and upgrade of San Vicente Basketball and tennis/volleyball court; and $350,000 for Precinct V, for the paving of Kannat Tabla Drive.
“Nothing against the chairman of Ways and Means…but there are people who have been requesting and asking that the road be paved and fixed,” Benavente said, noting pressing issues in these precincts.
According to him, the funding would be a solution to the “band-aid” approach of re-patching roads repeatedly.
