The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, Kinpachi Restaurant staff, and the Saipan Awaodori Team collected more than 740 lbs of trash last Saturday at the Paseo de Marianas.
The cleanup started at 8am after meeting in front of the Kinpachi Restaurant to pick up supplies. More than 20 volunteers, including nine Kinpachi employees, 11 Saipan Awaodori Team members, and about 15 BECQ officers and staff showed up for the weekend event.
BECQ concentrated on taking out dirt and trash clogging the drainage along the area, in preparation of the storm drain cleanup that began yesterday, March 17.
Volunteers picked up trash and garbage from Coral Tree Avenue near Hyatt Regency Saipan and Fiesta Resort & Spa, to Micro Beach Road near American Memorial Park, the Beach Road area, toward Paseo de Marianas, and near the drainage at Winchell’s Road.
“Were so happy that they joined us in the cleanup because now they are concentrating on the tourist area in Garapan,” said Sonia Siwa, coordinator for PDM Promoters, Inc., referring to BECQ’s participation.
The cleanup was being held in preparation for a multi-agency cleanup of Garapan’s storm drains to address the recent flooding events associated with non-seasonal rains in the region.
The drainage cleanup that began yesterday is led by Department of Public Works, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., BECQ, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, and National Park Services. It will last approximately three weeks; traffic will be closed temporarily for the work crews to start with the road next to the drainage canal adjacent to Fiesta Resort and will move toward the American Memorial Park.
BECQ stated that those who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a brigade T-shirt.
Those who want to volunteer can contact BECQ office at 664-8500/1.
