Become a Reading Ranger at the AMP
Reading Rangers is a youth reading program at American Memorial Park. The program highlights a variety of books that touch on the park’s mission to honor the American and Marianas people who gave their lives during the Marianas Campaign of World War II.
In August, Saipan youth are invited to be part of two different Reading Ranger events:
• Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr
– Kindergarten 3rd Grade: Aug. 4, from 9am to 11:30am
– 4th-6th Grade: Aug. 4 and Aug. 11, from 2pm to 4:30pm (for 4th-6th graders, this is a two-day program. Please plan to have your readers join us on both Aug. 4 and again on Aug. 11).
Readers will explore the life of young Sadako. This book tells the story of a girl from Hiroshima who becomes sick with leukemia in the years after the atom bomb was dropped and her race to fold 1,000 paper cranes. After reading the book, participants will engage in fun learning activities and learn about the story’s connections to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the park. Students will also help to fold 1,000 paper cranes that will be sent to the Children’s Peace Memorial in Hiroshima Japan, in recognition of World Peace Day.
• The Unbreakable Code by Sara Hoagland
– Kindergarten-4th Grade: Aug. 14, from 9:30am to 11:30am and Aug. 18, from 9:30am to 11:30am
Tuesday, Aug. 14, is Navajo Code Talker Day. To remember the incredible story of the Navajo people and their important role during World War II, American Memorial Park is inviting young readers to participate in this year’s second Reading Ranger selection. During each session children will be guided through The Unbreakable Code by Sara Hoagland and have the opportunity to participate in fun and educational activities focused on the lessons of the story.
Pre-registration is not required. To participate, simply come down to the American Memorial Park Visitor Center on the date and time of the session you would like to attend.
