Third grade students and volunteers of GTC Elementary School recently received new uniforms paid for with funds raised by their participation in the Beautify My Marianas beautification program of the Marianas Visitors Authority.
On Jan. 6, 2016, the students of 3rd grade section C picked up over 150 lbs of trash on the beach from behind the school north to PauPau Beach Park, as well as around the pavilions at the park.
“On this day three sets of tourists—Russians, Americans, and Guamanians—and two sets of local picnickers were happy to see our kids taking care of the beach, and told them what a good job they were doing for the beach,” said Claudia Palacios of GTC Elementary School. “After an hour of cleaning around the PauPau Beach Park, students and volunteers posed for a group photo, with our first load of trash, which was then piled into the truck for transport. The total trash collected on this beach cleanup was a whopping 180 lbs.”
The class recently sent the MVA a photo of the new uniforms they purchased with the money earned.
“Thank you, MVA and Beautify My Marianas, for your sponsorship,” said Palacios, in the group post-action report. “Your partnership is greatly appreciated.”
Beautify My Marianas offers $100 to student or other groups that pick up trash over 1-mile in an assigned area (payment may increase based on difficulty). For more information on Beautify My Marianas or an application, visit the MVA homepage at www.mymarianas.com. Groups must apply to participate and document their cleanup with a written report, list of participants, and photos. (MVA)
