Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, along with press secretary Angel Demapan, left yesterday for Guam to attend the 17th Micronesian Chief Executives Summit, which kicks off today. Pre-summit meetings were held yesterday.

Fitial’s Guam trip came a week after returning from Washington, D.C. and California for a three-week meeting with federal agencies and fellow governors.

This year’s theme for the three-day summit in Guam is “Oceans Unite Us.” Nearly 100 officials and representatives from Micronesian islands are expected to be at the summit being held at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort. As of yesterday afternoon, however, the agenda was still being finalized by the host committee.

Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo said the leaders of Micronesia will be in Guam this week “with one common goal—one united purpose: to set the course for a better Micronesia.”

Teresa Kim, counsel for the lieutenant governor and acting press secretary, said the governor will attend both the summit and University of Guam Charter Day ceremony. The governor is expected return Friday morning.

The Micronesian Chief Executives Summit is composed of governors and chief executives of the CNMI, Guam, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia’s four state governors of Chuuk, Yap, Pohnpei and Kosrae. Because the Micronesian islands are all communities that draw their economic livelihood, cultural values, spiritual well-being and civic strength from their ocean-based environments, many common activities focus on environmental protection and sustainable development.
