‘Police got excellent tips in Garapan rape case’
Public Safety Commissioner Ramon C. Mafnas disclosed that investigators continue to receive “excellent tips” relating to the rape case in Garapan.
“We are working on that. So as much as we’d like to issue information, we want to keep this process respectable,” said Mafnas in a news briefing on Friday at the Department of Corrections’ conference room.
Following criminal justice process, he said they intend to control the release of information rather than make a mistake and lose some of the evidence.
“The golden rule here is that we need to link the suspect to the crime scene and to the victim and to the evidence,” Mafnas said.
He added that they continue to show photo lineups to the victim and witnesses.
Last week, DPS released an artist’s composite sketch of the suspected rapist, hoping the drawing would help community members identify and report any and all sightings, including the suspect’s identity.
Last Feb. 24, Mafnas said that witnesses and the victim have so far failed identify the suspect from several pictures shown them by investigators.
Mafnas, however, disclosed that investigators have identified one additional witness.
The suspect reportedly beat up and raped the victim, described as a 25-year-old Asian, inside her bedroom in western Garapan on the morning of Jan. 29
The suspect also tried to take the victim with him to his car at knifepoint, but she managed to escape by yelling for help.
The suspect was described as in his late teens to early 20’s, brown complexioned, very short hair, about 5’5” to 5’8” tall, and weighing 150 to 170 lbs.
The victim sustained some injuries.
Police said the suspect fled the scene in an older model yellowish gold Hyundai Accent four-door sedan.
