Mafnas: We’re making progress in Romero slay case
Department of Public Safety Commissioner Ramon C. Mafnas said Friday that they are “making progress” in their investigation into the killing of bartender Emerita “Emie” Romero.
In a news briefing, Mafnas said they are waiting for the forensic analysis and examinations of evidence from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s laboratory in Virginia.
Mafnas said the results of the FBI examinations “will more or less seal” the Romero case. He refused to elaborate.
The commissioner also disclosed that he requested the FBI to conduct a cell site analysis. He refused to elaborate, saying he does not want to jeopardize the investigation.
According to digital investigations experts, cell site analysis is a tool in criminal investigations in which a mobile phone’s call data records are used to trace the historic geographical movement of the phone as it moves from place to place.
Last Feb. 24, Mafnas disclosed that DPS and the FBI are investigating a “person of interest.”
Romero was last seen alive boarding a green or blue tinted sedan around 3am on Feb. 5 near her residence in Garapan. FBI agents found her body two days later during a search in the northernmost building of the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque.
The cash reward, including the Crime Stoppers $1,000, has now reached $22,000, for any information leading to an arrest in this case.
