Reflections

I am a grateful off-island native who enjoys your paper online everyday to keep up with news at home. I am a student attending California State University in Sacramento. At 14, I was sent here against my will by my barely-getting-by parents. While trying to find my footing in this enormous foreign land, I lost my sense of direction, of who I was, and afraid of what I’d become. Luckily, my father made sure to remind me to never forget where you come from.

After 12 years I can still hear the waves crashing against Banzai Cliff. I can feel the gentle breeze lift my hair off my shoulders while the blazing sun darkens over my already dokngos skin. I’ll never forget standing atop Mount Tapochau and capturing every green edge by simply turning in a circle. I plan to revisit Saipan, but not until I can return with an education that will benefit my fellow islanders.

I thank my parents who have sacrificed their means and continue to live underprivileged in a little lonely house in Kagman III. I would like to encourage future leaders of the CNMI and advise them that the possibilities are endless for those who aim high and work hard. Saipan will always be home, but the sooner you leave, the sooner you can come back, just as I will soon.
