The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. yesterday warned hundreds of its customers in Chalan Kiya, Fina Sisu, and Northern Marianas College of limited water supply after its crew found out that the Kannat Tabla water tank is nearly empty.

Affected residents were warned of possible water shortages and/or outages beginning yesterday.

Early Thursday morning, CUC water operations crew discovered that the Kannat Tabla tank was nearly empty due to an operational problem. Immediate steps were taken to correct the system problems but more time is needed to refill the tank.

In a statement, CUC said that it has been working to increase water hours throughout Saipan with its goal to achieve 24-hour service all over the Commonwealth this year. Part of this effort, CUC said, is to move water between system zones to various tanks. The goal is to operate the water system by having customers served by the water stored in CUC tanks and not direct-feed from wells.

Unfortunately, CUC said this sequencing process failed with the Kannat Tabla tank, preventing it from being refilled Wednesday night. “CUC has taken immediate steps to correct the deficiencies. However, there will be shortages and possible outages in this very large service area,” added the statement.
