Failed punditry
Dr. Shun Young unequivocally nailed the unsustainable position placed against the local hospital by the powers that be by luring it with an initial funding of $5 million (when last fiscal year it was funded some $43 million) and said, “Okay, you are now independent, bye!”
Severing CHC from its budgetary obligation without at least a five-year transition period is a crime against the NMI community, if not malfeasance or misfeasance in public office or both. It may be exciting the political punditry that gets into the pages of the newspapers, the saddest episode though being the taxpayers getting the royal screw at day’s end! Do we take this lying down and for how much longer?
Even a 10-year transition period would be overly optimistic to see CHC pay for itself. Reason? The NMI needs a population base of over 250,000 people. Our population is about 57K. Throw the cost of utilities into the equation and you run into the same difficult feat of lacking the numbers to spread the cost around. Our best bet is to keep our fingers crossed, praying to divine providence for any and all miracles this side of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Better yet, let’s start burning coconut oil from dusk to dawn. It’s the only way out of more shocks that will hit consumers as unstable costs of fossil fuel escalates at every blink of the eye.
If the foremost definition of leadership is “placing people first,” then we haven’t seen this phenomenon here to date nor in recent past, have we? Interesting how one side of the street tried to outmaneuver the other with its silly and shallow agenda to sever and avoid defraying the cost of healthcare. The administration hastily pushed this deal through but was caught with its filthy fingers in the cookie jar while the Legislature simply failed to catch what was presented it requiring deliberative discussions. How sad the wind our sails are torn!
Thank heavens we have medical professionals with rock solid moral turpitude to protect the innocent from the reckless bunch on the hill.
