A CNMI senatorial delegation composed of Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Sen. Ralph Torres, and Sen. Frank Cruz and the U.S. Pinoys for Good Governance delegation met with Philippine President Benigno Aquino III’s deputy executive secretary Teofilo Pilando at the Malacanang Palace recently.

At the meeting, they discussed the USP4GG advocacies and issues on Medicare Portability Demonstration Project, which will allow Philippine accredited hospitals to directly bill Medicare for CNMI and Guam residents, the closure of the Philippine Consulate General office on Saipan, immigration issues faced by Filipinos in the CNMI, and U.S. visa waiver for Filipinos in Guam and the CNMI, among other things.

Prominent Filipinos, including philanthropist Filipino-American leader Loida Nicolas Lewis and internationally renowned stem cell expert Dr. Samuel Bernal, and government officials were very much impressed with the three CNMI senators and their humanist attitudes and approach toward Filipinos living for years in the CNMI with immigration problems. Their visit to the Philippines resulted in so much goodwill for the CNMI and its people. The three senators forged lifelong friendships with their hosts.

Attorney Ted Laguatan, a respected U.S. lawyer with residences in California and the Philippines, stated that Senate President Manglona exhibited outstanding statesmanship in leading this goodwill visit to the Philippines with senators Torres and Cruz.

“Not only have these senators gained our respect, they have also endeared themselves to the Filipinos they have met. They will always be given a warm welcome in the Philippines,” Laguatan added. (PR)
