The Guam Preservation Trust and the Northern Mariana Islands Humanities Council are calling for papers for the first ever Marianas History Conference.

The conference, slated for June 14 to 16, with the venue to be announced later, will feature keynote speakers University of Guam president Robert Underwood and Fr. Francis X. Hezel, S.J.

The theme for the conference is “One Archipelago, Many Stories,” which highlights the deep and rich history of the Mariana Islands and bridges the political division of the archipelago dating back to the late 19th century.

Papers to be submitted for the conference cover a wide range of categories: Ancient History, which includes results of archaeological research; Early Colonial, which covers 17th to 18th centuries; Late Colonial, from 19th to 20th centuries; World War II; Recent or post-war; and oral history and genealogical research.

Paper lengths should include full presentations for 20 minutes and shorter communications for five minutes. There will be arrangements for a limited number of featured presentations of up to 30 minutes.

The organizers will also accept posters focusing on the conference theme and/or topics and will be exhibited until the second day of the conference and will be returned on the final day.

Paper and poster abstracts should have a maximum of 150 words and submitted no later than March 15. Complete papers in Word format should be received by June 1 and final posters by June 14.

Diversity is encouraged among participants so the call for papers is also open to high school and college students. Panels will be organized once the number and range of papers is finalized. Interested scholars are invited to volunteer as session chairs.

Additional activities such as film screenings, history book exhibit and sales, local art exhibit and sales, as well as optional tours will be provided to conference participants.

Discounted rates for the participants’ hotel accommodations will also be available.
