The Saipan International School Geckos finally got their taste of victory, following a come-from-behind 32-26 win against Grace Christian Academy in the junior varsity division of the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Basketball League last Friday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Both teams started slow and only managed a basket apiece in the opening 10 minutes, before GCA got its engine started in the second quarter and built an 11-7 advantage at the half.

Dongha Lee did most of the damage for the Eagles, scoring five points in the first half.

The Geckos and Eagles then traded blows in the third quarter with Lee still finding his mark and adding six more points to give GCA a 26-15 lead, heading into the final period.

After being held to just three points in the first half, SIS’ Chris Cepeda showed signs of heating up in the third quarter and led the Geckos’ fourth-quarter attack. He tallied eight points in the fourth period to go with Fen Xuan Lin’s six markers, as SIS had its biggest output in the payoff canto with 17 markers against GCA’s none.

The Eagles had plenty of looks at the basket, but simply could not get their shots to fall.

Cepeda led the Geckos’ first win with a dozen marker, while Lee scrambled for 11 in defeat.

The season continues on Wednesday with SIS challenging Saipan Southern High School’s junior Mantas Rays (3-2) at 4pm, and MHS Dolphins (4-1) taking on the Mount Carmel School Knights (0-7) at 5:30pm.
