NMASA awardees in spotlight

The week ended with Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association honoring the top performers for last season during the NMASA Annual Sports Banquet at the Seaside Hall of the Saipan Grand Hotel.

Heading the list of awardees were 2011 Athletes of the Year Yvonne Bennett and Joshua Jones and 2011 TSL Foundation/Student Athletes of the Year Rachel Abrams and Rafael Jones. Joining them are Coach of the Year Tony Rogolifoi, Administrator of the Year Rose Igitol, and Team of the Year the CNMI Baseball Team. Completing the list is 2011 CNMI Hall of Fame inductee Vicente Saures.

Other notable events last week included on-going and annual competitions on Saipan.

In the MISO soccer, the MHS Lady Dolphins swept the regular season, while Saipan International School and Grace Christian Academy led the girls volleyball with similar 11-1 records.

In the MISO boys caging, GCA won over Mt. Carmel School, which also lost to Kagman High School.

Still in basketball, the DLX/Miller Lite caging kicked off with defending champion Blue Haus and Mobil Smiles winning the opening games.

In tennis, the 2012 White Coconut Tennis Classic featured competitions in the girls and boys U10, U12, U15, and U18 divisions, men’s and women’s singles, and the unique mixed-up doubles. Week 1 drew over 100 players.

In cycling, more than 70 bikers joined the 2012 Northern Passage with Butch Sublemente leading the winners list, beating Brian Morris and Lewie Tenorio in the MTB championship course division.

In beach volleyball, Toni Yamada and Charnessa Lizama ruled the women’s division of the 4th Annual For the Love of Volleyball doubles tournament at the Hyatt Regency Saipan’s sand courts, while Tyce Mister and Nick Gross reigned supreme in the men’s side.
