Over 20 companies, nearly 50 students attend career fair
Over 20 companies and nearly 50 students from two public high schools on island graced the Public School System’s career fair yesterday at the Saipan World Resort’s Royal Taga Hall.
Tyce Mister, Marianas High School cooperative program instructor, said 22 mostly senior students participated from his class while 25 joined from Kagman High School, led by their cooperative education instructor, Christopher Tenorio.
Yesterday’s event was the second initiated by the co-op program for the school year. Over 100 students from three public high schools joined the same event in September 2011.
The PSS co-op program is designed to help prepare students for the job market. It consists of both instruction on campus and training off campus. Students participate in completing resumes, applications, interviews, personal development, and other projects.
Freddy Ogo, a junior from KHS, was seen approaching representatives of various firms, asking them questions, and wroting down notes for reference. He said the fair helped him understand the operation of many companies.
First-timers Caitlin Chargualaf and Labian Muna, both from KHS, told Saipan Tribune that the actual interview and personal interaction with company representatives were good experiences.
Interested in becoming a military counselor, Chargualaf said that yesterday’s experience will be a stepping stone for her future.
“I was really nervous because this is my first time to join this fair, but as I go along, it makes me feel comfortable,” she said.
Tenorio, KHS co-op education teacher, said the fair is an opportunity for high school students to establish contacts with potential employers. He encouraged more companies to join the fair to help equip students with the necessary tools and information on how to get a job.
Among the participants in the fair were Marianas Health, Law Revision Commission, Office of Adult Probation, Kan Pacific Saipan, NMC, PSS HRO, MVA, PIC, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, LaoLao Bay, KKMP, WIA, NMHC, Hyatt, IT&E, Joeten, Department of Labor, NMTI, Tan Holdings, RTT Law, and Torres Refrigeration.
