Teachers equalize Rocball title series
The best-of-five title series in the 2011 Rocball Fall League is now down to three after the Teachers managed to even up the championship showdown yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Teachers won Game 2, 35-29, to equalize and grab the momentum from top seed Aim Low going into today’s pivotal Game 3.
It took the Teachers only three sets to tie the series and foil Aim Low’s bid to move one win away from clinching the championship. In the first set of Game 2, the Teachers romped to a 13-5 win, while Aim Low recovered in the second set with a 14-9 triumph. Despite the second-set loss, the Teachers still led, 22-19, going into the deciding third set, and eventually closed out the game early after a 13-10 victory in the final set.
Had Aim Low won the third set (and the Teachers still on top), the game could have gone into overtime where the former might have a slight psychological edge because of its Game 1 win.
Aim Low drew first blood in the finals after pulling off a 46-38 victory in overtime last Monday. In overtime in Game 1, Aim Low scored four aces for a quick 8-2 win in the deciding fourth set.
However, Aim Low failed to ride on the momentum of their Game 1 victory during yesterday’s second game, allowing the Teachers to even up the series.
Tyce Mister top-scored for the Teachers in Game 2, drilling 10 points off three kees, one ace, and one xunk. John Nekaifes also drained three kees and one xunk for eight points, while Nick Gross made one kee and one ace to add four markers.
Riden Fiden also logged 10 points on the losing end, hitting three kees, one ace, and one xunk, while Jalse Kapwich, J.R. Gechig, and A.J. Aguilar only chipped in two points each. Gechig and Aguilar had one kee apiece, while Kapwich connected one ace. Y.J. Nakayama gave Aim Low three points off the game’s lone goal made in the second set.
