Newest FOA production mixes history, romance
On Feb. 14, 18, and 19, 2012, the Friends of the Arts is presenting Aida, the Musical by Tim Rice, Elton John, Linda Woolverton, et al, adapted from Aida, the opera by Giuseppe Verdi. This musical is about Aida and Radames falling in love with each other.
The story opens in the present time, at the Egyptian exhibit of an art museum, and shows the re-incarnation of the two main characters, Aida and Radames, and then moves to the inner story, back in time to the African continent, in ancient Egypt, to explain and explore this love. It demonstrates the power of love, not ending even after their deaths, reborn into their new lives and attracted to each other without knowing or remembering why.
Aida is a Nubian princess who was captured by Egyptian soldiers, and Radames is the captain of the Egyptian military. Radames is betrothed to Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter, but he falls in love with Aida, whom he gives to Amneris as a present. Radames’ growing love for Aida is apparent to all, and while Amneris feels the sting, it is Zoser, the father of Radames, who acts to prevent it.
This powerful and romantic musical is a perfect choice for February, when the CNMI community celebrates both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day as it is a romance set in the ancient African continent.
The show is directed by Paul Dujua, with Harold Easton as producer. The cast includes Mariel Ferrer as Aida, Mark Gonzales as Radames, Rosemarie Liangco as Amneris and Paul Dujua as Zoser. The cast has been rehearsing for weeks, practicing the choreographed dance moves and learning the songs and harmonies that make this show memorable.
The show will be presented at Charley’s Cabaret, Pacific Islands Club. On Valentine’s Day, it is a dinner show, with a special menu at 6pm and the show at 7:30pm. The price of the Valentine’s Day ticket is $65 per adult or $50 for FOA members. The time of the weekend shows is at 7pm. The price of the ticket is $15 for adults, $12 for FOA members, and $8 for students. For more information or reservations, contact Frank Gibson at 789-8674 or flgibson@yahoo.com. (PR)
