Members of the CNMI sports community had their hands full last week with the staging of various competitions.
In cycling, the Mt. Tapochau Bike Club organized the 1st Annual San Vicente Church Bike Race with over 80 bikers joining the fundraiser. Veteran Butch Sublemented led the winners of the event, ruling the MTB championship course. Other top finishers in their respective divisions were Noel Altamirano, Ricardo Antonio, Susan Marchitti, Ronald Lanuza, Joan Salazar, Nap Dizon, Esther Ada, Juanita Fajardo, Rima Yamagishi, and Sheryl Camacho.
In another race last week, Mamiko Oshima-Berger gained her third straight women’s crown after topping the 20K even in the 5th Marianas Coffee Trail Run. Oshima-Berger shared the podium with first time men’s division winner Charles Epperson. Ronald Villafria and Akane Imaya prevailed in the 10K race.
In baseball, the CNMI Junior National Team completed its stint in the 18U/AAA Oceania Championship last Thursday at the Paseo Stadium in Guam. The CNMI sluggers bowed to Guam in the battle for third place, 1-3, to finish the tournament with only one win in seven games. The Commonwealth bets won over New Zealand in the preliminaries. Australia ruled the tournament after beating New Zealand in the finals.
In basketball, the MDX caging was down to four teams after last week’s playoffs. Making it to the semis were San Antonio, Chalan Kanoa, As Lito, and San Vicente.
Still in basketball, the MISO boys caging continued with its regular season games with Kagman High School posting the best win of the week after handing Marianas High Schools its first loss in four matches.
Still in MISO, Saipan International School 1 kept its unbeaten record (8-0) in the girls volleyball competition, while MHS1 still leads in the girls soccer.
In Rocball, Aim Low advanced to the finals first after sweeping Just-Do-It in the semifinals, while the Teachers followed suit after eliminating Roc It.
In soccer, MP United Football Club held a rally in Navy Hill to open up the spring season and later last week sent three teams to Guam for a friendly competition.
