Fitial to meet with Sotomayor on Sunday
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial will be joining a reception for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Sunday on Saipan, press secretary Angel Demapan said yesterday.
“The Fitial administration is honored to have a sitting Supreme Court justice visit the Commonwealth,” Demapan said. “Despite the challenges we face, the CNMI is still a member of the American political family. Thus, the administration is grateful that Justice Sotomayor has chosen to make this visit in an effort to learn about the way of life here [on] the islands as well as to meet with other justices, judges, and members of the bar association.”
This will be the first time that Fitial will meet Sotomayor.
Sotomayor was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009 and is the court’s 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice, and its third female justice.
Sotomayor arrived in Guam on Wednesday night for the annual conferences hosted by the District Court of Guam and the District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan earlier told the media that Sotomayor has invited members of the CNMI congressional mock trial champion team to a personal dialogue on Jan. 29 at the American Memorial Park.
In Guam, Sotomayor will also hold a question-and-answer session with some 1,500 elementary to university students at the University of Guam Field House today.
