Teams and individuals started to get busy this year as various competitions took place last week.

At the Capitol Bowling Center, the Saipan Bowling Association had its Budweiser King of the Lanes finale with Simon Manacop ruling the season-ending event. Manacop prevailed over siblings Ruselle and Raymond Zapanta to take the championship for the first time since the event was held in 2004.

Manacop finished third in the qualifier, defeated Raymond in the semis, and then stunned the top-ranked Ruselle in the finals to rule the competition.

In Garapan, triathlete Butch Sublemente won the pre-XTERRA/Tagaman run race, beating 30 other runners. It was Sublemente’s second pre-XTERRA event win, as he also dominated Enticer 1 held at Paupau Beach.

At the Marianas High School Gymnasium, both private and public high schools on Saipan continued seeing action in the MISO boys basketball and girls volleyball leagues. In the boys caging, MHS and Saipan Southern High School remained unbeaten in the varsity division, while Saipan International School and MHS 1 are also perfect in the volleyball competition.

MISO also had its soccer league games at the Oleai Sports Complex Field with the MHS Lady Dolphins downing the Lady Rays.

In basketball, Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands announced the start of the tryouts for the CNMI U17 teams that will compete in the 2012 Micronesian Basketball Tournament (Western Division), which Saipan will be hosting this May.

The girls U17 tryout was held at the MHS Gymnasium with BANMI vice president Elias Rangamar conducting the training sessions. BANMI is still looking for a coach. Over at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium, interim coach Rufino Aguon led the tryouts for boys U17.

Still in basketball, the MDX caging continued its regular season games as teams struggled to gain playoff seats in Brackets A and B.
