MHS1, GCA sweep volleyball opener
The Marianas High School varsity Lady Dolphins-MHS1 and the Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles cruised to one-sided wins over separate opponents as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls volleyball season started on Tuesday at the MHS Gymnasium.
In addition, both the junior and varsity Lady Geckos of Saipan International School also notched victories.
The 2011 runner-up MHS1 dominated newcomer Marianas Baptist Academy in three sets. MBA put up good fight, but fell short in the opening set, 17-25, before MHS1 stepped it up a level and secured the win, 25-6 in the next frame. MHS1 went on to take the final set, 15-6.
GCA, meanwhile, grinded out a sweep over Kagman High School, 25-17, 25-21, and 15-11, but despite the final score KHS often showed signs of life during the match.
SIS’ junior varsity (SIS2) bested MHS2, 25-12, 25-14, but the latter finished strong and took the third set, 15-10, to save face.
Meanwhile, the defending champion SIS1 was gifted its first win via a no-show forfeit by the Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays.
The season continues today at 4pm with MHS1 on a road draw against SIS2 at the north end and MBA hosting SSHS on the south court.
Then at 5pm GCA takes on SIS1 on the north side and MHS2 calls KHS to the south square.
