SRCR welcomed nine new members in 2011
The Saipan Radio Control Racers Association added nine new members in 2011 and offered two new racing classes.
Due to maintenance and fuel costs SRCR members went away from its 1/8 Nitro Truggy class and released an open division to complement its current 1/10 electric short course A-Main class. The group also unveiled its growing “Young Gun” beginner electric short course class.
“We are hoping to gain more members this year and see which beginners will rise through the ranks and take on some of the veteran racers,” stated SRCR front man Rodney Catalla.
In response to the halt of the Nitro Truggy heats Catalla said, “It is difficult to keep gassing and fixing the nitro cars after practices and events. They use a special type of fuel and other special parts that can be quite costly. Most of the new and younger members have electric cars anyways, so we might break out the truggy cars now and again this season, but are focusing primarily on the electric races.”
The club changes its closed course twice a year.
This year the club would like to host a friendship event featuring off-island racers from Guam, Tinian, and Rota.
There are now just fewer than 30 active SRCR members, which regularly take part in practices at the As Lito track every Saturday from 2pm to 6pm.
In addition, the SRCR tries to hold a daylong race, once a month, usually on a Sunday from 9am to 5pm in their three racing classes. The public is welcome to check out the track to learn more about their sport hobby.
