The mysterious disappearance of the Luhk sisters
The Commonwealth was stunned with the mysterious disappearance of sisters Faloma and Maleina Luhk, reportedly while waiting for a school bus near their residence in As Teo on May 25. The girls have yet to be found. Faloma was 10, while Maleina was 9 years old at the time of their disappearance.
For over a month, the entire Commonwealth witnessed the most massive islandwide aerial, land, and sea searches ever conducted on Saipan for missing persons.
A helicopter from the U.S. Navy and a C-130 plane from the U.S. Air Force joined law enforcers and community volunteers in the search. Hawaii’s State Civil Defense even sent its tracking dog, Pohaku, to the island.
The FBI also called in an additional 20 special agents and support staff, including members of the Child Abduction Response Deployment Team. Federal and local enforcers scoured for a week a garbage heap at the Marpi landfill to look for clues. Caves, jungles, beaches, manholes, abandoned buildings, and houses were included in the searches.
The FBI, private groups, and individuals, offered cash reward totaling $50,000 for information leading to the discovery of the girls, to no avail.
