UFO turns over $2.5K donation for Sendong victims
The United Filipino Organization concluded its fundraising event for the victims of Typhoon Sendong on Christmas Day, collecting $2,500 in donations to support the rebuilding efforts for calamity survivors in the aftermath of the worst catastrophe to hit Northern Mindanao in years.
Officials of the umbrella organization of some 30 Filipino groups in the CNMI led by president Bong Malasarte presented the check donation to Philippine Consul General Medardo Macaraig at his office on Tuesday afternoon.
Macaraig said that the Consulate deeply appreciates the financial support of the community for victims of Typhoon Sendong in the Philippines.
“I take note that these donations have been realized despite the economic difficulties of everyone in the CNMI,” said Macaraig. “Filipinos and the people of the CNMI have truly made sacrifices for the unfortunate victims of the tragedy.”
Macaraig also expressed his appreciation to the UFO officers and members “and everyone who assisted them for reaching out to everyone and organizing this fund drive.”
“A lot more work needs to be done and these contributions will help in the relief and rehabilitation efforts for these victims. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone,” added Macaraig.
Malasarte said the UFO is thankful for the overwhelming response of the community for their fundraising drive to help victims of Typhoon Sendong, which claimed over 1,500 lives with hundreds more still missing.
“With the economic downturn that’s affecting everyone in the CNMI, the amount we collected can already be considered substantial and would definitely help at least some of the families who lost their loved ones and their properties due to the disaster,” he told Saipan Tribune.
Malasarte said the donated amount will be given to the victims through the Philippine National Red Cross.
The president thanked IT&E, which donated $1,000 last Thursday, and the many individuals who went to the four locations where officers, members, and other volunteers accepted monetary donations on behalf of UFO.
Malasarte disclosed that some $1,000 in donations were accepted even after the Dec. 25 deadline. He said the amount will be endorsed once again to the Consulate.
“I’ve always believed that it’s better to help than be helped. Once again, I thank the CNMI community for extending assistance to the victims of Typhoon Sendong,” he added.
