WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo last week announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the Guam Housing & Urban Renewal Authority (GHURA) $879,424 in Federal financial assistance. The funds were made available through HUD’s Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance programs for Fiscal Year 2011.

CoC programs include the Supportive Housing program, Shelter Plus Care program, and the Section 8 moderate rehabilitation for Single Room Occupancy dwellings for homeless individuals. These programs provide funding and assistance to homeless persons, including transitional housing and permanent housing support services.

-$313,363 was awarded to GHURA’s Guma Hinemlo’ program. This program aims to provide a safe, supportive, and nurturing living environment for residents and provides assistance in obtaining a higher level of self-sufficiency.

-$171,852 was awarded to GHURA’s Aftercare Housing program, a tenant-based shelter plus care housing voucher program that aims to provide homeless men with disabilities an avenue to promote self-sufficiency.

-$161,448 was awarded to GHURA’s Housing First Rental Assistance program.

-$125,415 was awarded to GHURA’s Oasis Empowerment Center, which addresses the critical need of homeless women with substance abuse and/or dependency.

-$79,082 was awarded to GHURA’s Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) program. This digital database builds a system of care to address homelessness on Guam.

-$28,224 was awarded to GHURA’s CARIDAD Supportive Services program, which provides case management, information and referral services, counseling, and life skill training for adults with disabilities who have difficulties obtaining permanent housing and financial stability.

“The federal funds received today will assist GHURA in providing assistance for Guam’s public housing programs and will help support individuals as they seek self-sufficiency,” Congresswoman Bordallo said today. “These funds will also help address the needs of Guam’s homeless population. I commend the GHURA for its efforts in obtaining these grants. I look forward to these resources being used to benefit our community.” (PR)
