Teams raced for playoff berths last week.

In the Shirley’s caging, the playoff round started with eight teams and after a week, two were left standing—PSS/McGraw-Hill and DFS Galleria. The two finalists were scheduled to battle for the championship last night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

Over at the Hopwood Junior High School Field for the FA Cup (for boys U12 and girls U15), 10 squads also competed at the beginning of the playoffs and Paire and MP United boys U12 teams made it all the way to the finals. MP United went on to win the championship.

Still in football, the boys U15 and U18 teams and women’s squads had their separate FA Challenge Cup at the Hopwood and Oleai Sports Complex pitches. After last week’s playoff matches, only four teams have survived, the MP United U18 and U15, Paire U18, and Matansa U18.

In the 5th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament, four clubs advanced to the playoffs—Saipan Badminton Club, Golden Racquet, Berks Blazers, and Shirley’s Badminton Club. In the semis, SBC won over Shirley’s while the Blazers slipped past Golden Racquet. SBC then went on to win the championship.

Other notable events last week were the record-swims of Tsunami Saipan swimmers, the 5th Annual Hell of Marianas Century Cycle Race, the 2011 Saipan Swim Club Jingle Bell Fun Run, and the 2011 Northern Marianas Athletics All Schools Cross-Country Championships.

Tsunami Saipan’s Lukas Kang, Ryuto Yanai, Miku Tammy, Kaito Yanai, Angel Marie Tan, and Kensuke Kimura crushed CNMI age groups marks during the Tsunami Swim Circuit Series 3 at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

In the 100-kilometer Hell of Marianas race, the Australians triumphed with John Anderson winning the men’s event with a record-time of two hours, 57 seconds, and 47.09 seconds and compatriot Aussie Jodie Willet topping the women’s field after clocking in at 3:16:15.72.

The SSC Jingle Bell Fun Run from the Garapan Fishing Base to Kilili Beach Park lured more than 80 runners with Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel leading the finishers with a time of 17:25.

In the All Schools cross-country championships, Marianas High School swept the high school divisions, while Hopwood reigned in the girls U14 division.
