Proa fended off FGC’s fourth-quarter rally to eke out a 79-78 win during the lone game completed in the Garapan Basketball League IT&E Cup last Friday at the Garapan Basketball Court.

Jack Lizama made a putback in the closing seconds for the game-winning basket, improving Proa’s record to 4-2. FGC fell to a 2-3 slate.

A couple of early three-pointers gave Proa a 16-12 lead in the first quarter of Friday’s opener. Joe Villacrusis paced Proa with seven markers in the period. Then Proa’s Pete Iguel began to work in the second and tallied 10 points to keep his team ahead at halftime, 38-32,

At the start of the second half, Proa drilled four more treys to remain in front, 59-52, heading into the final period. In the fourth frame, FGC continued to battle back and managed to take the lead for a brief period at crutch time.

Kae Bernardo made a clutch and one that gave his team the lead, 76-74, with two minutes left in the game. Proa’s Libuw fouled out as a result of Bernardo’s three-point play, freeing up space down low for FGC.

Later in the final minute a jump ball gave possession to FGC, after which Proa committed an ill-advised foul off the inbounds pass, sending Zack Babauta to the line. Babauta nailed both charities to up their lead to four, 78-74, but Proa’s Dan Barcinas quickly answered on the other end to pull his team within one, 77-78.

FGC went for the full court pass and Proa sniffed it out at half court. Proa misfired on its first shot, but Lizama came up with the putback for the win.

Pete Iguel led Proa with 24 points, while FGC’s Rex Yabut finished with 21 in the tough loss.

In the second game, Satbahi-Blue Haus (1-2) was leading Andhok’s (0-4), 53-35, with just over nine minutes left in the fourth when the match was rained-out.

Meanwhile, GBL action continues tonight with Mobil (2-3) taking on Andhok’s at 6:30pm, and undefeated Konflikt-IT&E (4-0) battling the Ol’Aces (1-2).
