Fitial also asks independents, Covenants if they are seeking re-election
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has asked not only Republican lawmakers but also his former Covenant Party members and independents whether they want to seek re-election under the Republican Party in the 2012 midterm elections.
Lawmakers interviewed yesterday said they have yet to decide and respond to the governor’s letter, just like Republican lawmakers.
Rep. Ray Palacios (Cov-Saipan) said he has not discussed his re-election with his family and precinct club members. He has also not decided whether to run under the Covenant Party or the Republican Party.
Rep. Edmund Villagomez (Cov-Saipan) confirmed receiving an email from the governor, but has not decided on the matter too.
House floor leader George Camacho (Ind-Saipan) said he has yet to respond to the governor’s letter. But he said he will seek re-election.
House minority leader Joseph Deleon Guerrero (R-Saipan) and other Republicans said they’re not in a hurry to decide whether to seek re-election or whether to still run under the GOP should they decide to seek re-election.
The governor, in his letter, asked lawmakers to let him know by Dec. 30 whether they are seeking re-election.
Fitial left the Republican Party to form the Covenant Party for his 2001 and 2005 gubernatorial bids. Although Fitial returned to the Republican Party in January this year, Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, House members who ran under the Covenant Party, and other individuals remain with the Covenant Party.
