Saipan motorists have one other thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: A 5-cent a gallon reduction in gas prices.

Mobil Oil Mariana Islands reduced by 5 cents a gallon its regular and premium unleaded gasoline at 3pm yesterday.

Shell Marianas’ pump prices remained unchanged as of 7:30pm last night, but the two oil giants always mirror each other’s price changes.

Mobil’s regular unleaded gasoline is now $4.709 a gallon, down from $4.759 a gallon.

Super unleaded gasoline now costs $5.029 a gallon at Mobil, down from $5.079 a gallon.

But the price of diesel at Mobil remains the same at $5.219 a gallon.

Omar Ajoste, a Chalan Kanoa resident, said while he’s thankful for a 5-cent relief, he thinks the pump prices of gas on island are “still high.”

“It should be less than $4,” he said in an interview last night while buying $10 gas for his sedan. He said a $10 gas will last one to two days, depending on where he drives.

Ajoste, just like other motorists, didn’t notice the 5-cent drop in prices until he was asked about it.

The last time Saipan motorists had a gas price change was in July—a 10-cent a gallon increase in pump prices of regular and super gasoline and diesel.

Retail pump prices are affected by a combination of factors, which include internationally traded wholesale prices, operating and capital cost, distribution costs, taxes and duties, currency exchange rates, and market competition.
