Marshall to prioritize adding more postal boxes
Newly installed Saipan Postmaster Amy Marshall said one of her top priorities is to provide additional postal boxes for the community.
“We’re working on that. We’re starting to issue boxes to customers,” Marshall told reporters.
According to Marshall, they have 300 additional boxes ready to be installed and issued to customers.
“The post office has to be reconfigured a little bit as we install those,” said Marshall. “There’s a spot that we have to reconstruct to install those 300 boxes.”
Marshall was officially installed yesterday at the Chamolinian Room of Hyatt Regency Saipan, replacing Hector Medina who retired after 39 years of service.
Marshall, who has been serving as the Saipan Postmaster since August, took her oath of office from U.S. Postal Service Honolulu district manager Frank Santos.
Born in Peoria, Illinois, Marshall served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington.
Marshall began her 17-year postal career as a rural carrier in Dillon Montana, working her way to becoming the postmaster in Crow Agency, Roundup, and Hardin, Montana. She served as the postmaster in Hereford, Arizona before moving to Saipan.
She will supervise six employees and the distribution of some 6,000 mails daily to customers.
“I really enjoy it here. My employees are fantastic to work with and the customers, even though we have long lines, they’re very patient and I thank them for that. The community is very, very patient with us,” she said.
When asked how she plans to address the long lines, Marshall said they are “on a hiring freeze” right now and that the post office only has three stations, which are all manned.
As for missing package complaints, Marshall urged customers to bring it to her attention. “The best thing to do is make sure you have tracking on your package because without the tracking, we can’t do anything. I can’t find it,” she added.
Marshall, who “loves” the farmers’ market, said she looks forward to doing a few other things during her stay. “I’m going to start paddling…besides golf, fishing, and shopping.”
She is married to husband Dennis, and they have a daughter, Crystal.
