PSS/McGraw-Hill routs DFS
PSS/McGraw-Hill reached the century mark to demolish DFS Galleria, 100-64, during the second game in the 3rd Annual Shirley’s Coffee Shop Invitational Basketball League last Saturday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
PSS broke the game wide open midway in the third quarter to extend its streak to four and improve to a 5-1 record for second place in the 10-team field. DFS slid for a share of third place with Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan after falling to a 5-2 card.
DFS stayed in the game until the first four minutes of the third quarter with Dan Barcinas and Pete Iguel trading triples with James Villacrusis. Iguel’s second triple in the third period moved DFS within seven, 45-52, but that was also the team’s last basket in that canto, while PSS drilled one basket after another to pull away, 74-45, entering the fourth frame.
Fatigue took its tool on Iguel, Barcinas, and Quincy Johnson, who earlier played in another league and in less than 30 minutes suited up for DFS. Barcinas was held to five points in the second half and scoreless in the fourth after making 19 in the first 20 minutes of play, while Iguel was limited to two markers in the fourth and had only 10 in the entire game. Johnson was held to seven points. DFS played without Jack Lizama, giving PSS lesser problems on defense.
On offense, PSS had a balance attack with five players breaking it into double figures and three others combining for 21 points. Kelvin Fitial top-scored for PSS with 20, Dave Sablan added 17, Villacrusis chipped in 14, and Walter Mendez and Mel Manibusan contributed 13 and 11, respectively.
Hyatt 89, Wushin 70
The first game last Saturday also resulted in a rout with Hyatt Regency Saipan pounding Wushin.
The victory snapped Hyatt’s three-game losing streak and gave the team a 2-4 card, while Wushin absorbed its fourth loss in a row and dropped to a 2-5 slate.
Hyatt limited Wushin to eight points in the first period to take control of the game and never looked back from thereon.
Bernardo Aquino matched the total output of Wushin in the opening canto to lift Hyatt to an early double-digit lead, 20-8. In the second quarter, Ferdie Tobias caught fire with 10 points to help Wushin cut the deficit to single digit at halftime, 28-35.
However, Hyatt managed to recover in the second half and reestablished its double-figure advantage with multiple players contributing on offense, while only Tobias and Jun Tabora piled up points for Wushin.
