Man gets 72-hour jail term for threat

The Superior Court has slapped a 72-hour prison term on a man who had threatened to punch his mother-in-law at her home in Chinatown, Saipan.
In a written order issued Wednesday, associate judge David A. Wiseman sentenced Joseph Jo Shoking to six months in prison, all suspended except for 72 hours, for assault and disturbing the peace, with credit for the two days he has already served in jail.
That means the 43-year-old Shoking will serve one more day in prison, which should begin today, Saturday.
After serving the one-day sentence, Shoking will be placed on supervised probation for one year. He was required to perform 50 hours of community service, pay a $250 fine, $100 probation fee, and $25 court assessment fee.
Shoking pleaded guilty to assault and disturbing the peace as part of a plea deal.
Shoking had gone to the house of his mother-in-law on May 7, 2011, cussed her, moved his fist toward her in a threatening manner, and refused to leave her home when asked.
The mother-in-law had to call the police on three separate occasions to remove Shoking from her property.
The victim told police that since her daughter passed away in 2009, Shoking neglected their four children and moved out of the house.
