Joint Region Marianas Named Energy Champion 2011

PITI, Guam—The Guam Energy Office honored Joint Region Marianas Oct. 27 with an Energy Champion 2011 award during an islandwide National Energy Awareness Month celebration at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort.
According to the GEO, the award is presented to organizations and interagency partners that have demonstrated its commitment to pursuing energy efficiency, conservation and investments in renewable energy technologies.
Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio praised JRM for its commitment to energy conservation on the island through a variety of renewable energy projects. Tenorio presented the award to Cmdr. Daniel Cook, JRM assistant regional engineer.
“This recognition is deeply appreciated,” said Cook. “It’s a fine demonstration of our partnership with the government of Guam as we advance our efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.”
The secretary of the Navy has outlined five energy goals to enhance and better enable combat capabilities, sustain the environment for future generations, and promote a clean energy economy. One of the five goals is to harness 50 percent of total Department of Navy energy consumption from alternative sources by 2020.
“NAVFAC Marianas has been working closely with the Department of Energy and other federal agencies to leverage available funding and resources in order to achieve this goal,” said Kevin Evans, JRM/NAVFAC Marianas energy manager. “We’ll continue to collaborate with our local and federal partners to research technologies that are cost-effective and practical for our island environment.”
As examples, the Navy converted 318 streetlights to efficient induction lighting; playgrounds and sidewalks on Naval Base Guam are powered by solar lights; and solar panel arrays, which represent one of three components in the Navy’s Energy Savings Performance Contract, are tied to the main electrical grid thereby minimizing the military’s reliance on fuel.
