Lions Club sets tree planting to meet global goal
Members of the Lions Club International District 204 Region 2 have organized a tree planting event on Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Lao Lao Bay beach area.
Region 2 zone chair Ladyvir Canape said this is the first time that the Saipan Unity Lions Club, Saipan Marianas Lions Club, and Saipan Fil-Am Lions Club have united to conduct its first region-wide tree planting activity as part of their efforts to help not only the community but the environment as well.
Canape said they have requested from the nonprofit group Mariana Islands Nature Alliance some 30 plant saplings to be used for Sunday’s event, which will be led by Region chair Eli Arago, secretary Mario Mayuga, treasurer Paul Madriaga, safety officer Boyet Escober, and PRO Annamae Adaza.
“Our tree-planting event is organized in response to the Lions Club International’s Million Tree Planting Campaign,” Canape told Saipan Tribune.
Lions Club International 2011-2012 president Wing-Kun Tam has challenged Lions throughout the world to plant one million trees this year to demonstrate the strength of its global network.
As of yesterday, the Lions Club International website reported that their members have already planted 5,213,587 trees.
Moreover, Canape said the event is also part of their efforts to support MINA which always welcomes volunteers to plant trees at the Lao Lao Bay area, one of the most valuable marine ecosystems in the island impacted by erosion and sedimentation.
“We want to help protect the area and make our own contribution in addressing the issue of global warming through our own small way,” she said.
Canape added that the event will also be an opportunity for get-together among region members.
“We encourage all Region 2 Lions and even non-members to take part in our tree-planting event,” she said.
The group will meet at 7am at the MINA office along Beach Road in Garapan. For more information, call 483-2118.
