Nannies: Do we need them or not?
I grew up without one and I became self-reliant. Some of my children grew up with a nanny; the others without. The ones I raised without a nanny follow my footsteps. The other that grew up with a nanny are not as self-reliant.
So my answer is no, because your children will not grow up as you want them to. But my answer is also yes, because nowadays, I cannot trust a minor to watch over their little brothers and sisters for safety reason.
When I was little there was no television, no phones, the population was small, there were no crimes, and plenty of help was available. During the ’80s, I raised my children without a nanny but toward the end of the ’80s, I hired a nanny because I needed to work.
As we enter the ’90s, problems start to build. Problems such as parents with gambling addictions, drugs, plus cell phone, Internet and others modern technology starts coming in.
My question is, with the crimes and the ineffective regulatory agencies, will you trust your minor teenage daughter or son to watch over your young ones? I mean I see children do things out of desperations.
Children with nannies go home to warm meals, with someone to help them with their homework and watch them until their parents are home.
Children without a nanny either go to their parent’s work or friends and hang out and eat junk food, follow their friends to do stuff such as drink alcohol or maybe steal, then go on the Internet and watch stuff without supervision.
Today, with the growing population, too much gambling addictions, drugs and low economy, what do you think is going to happen? Many families are being broken because of gambling and drug additions. Hardly any fish, crab, wild chickens, and birds to catch and no more free food. Plus some of our children don’t know how to cook, grow, or hunt for food. The local college shut down so now another problem to address.
About six years ago, a friend of mine from the mainland who is a grandparent told me that they brought their grandson here to take him away from organized crime—organized crime in school. Do you think this will happen here?
So, now I ask, with all the challenges that we are facing today in raising our children, do we need a nanny or not?
