Omechelang, Manacop win October roll-offs
Simon Manacop and Gloria Omechelang played solid games over the weekend to rule the SBA-Budweiser October King and Queen of the Lanes Tournament at the Saipan Bowling Center in San Jose.
Manacop and Omechelang posted the best scores on both days of the monthly competition to secure the October titles. Incidentally, it was the third time they won together in the Saipan Bowling Association-sanctioned event, having topped the March and July roll-offs.
In the first day of competition in the King of the Lanes last Saturday, Manacop recorded 846 pinfalls to lead 11 other keglers. He posted more than 200 pinfalls in three of the four games (220, 255, 149, 222) in Day 1 to set the score to beat in Day 2. Manacop then returned at SBC last Sunday and tallied 767 pinfalls, which was also the highest score in Day 2. In SBA roll-offs, bowlers are allowed to join both days of the event, but only the higher score is counted for the ranking.
Percy Omechelang also bowled on both days, but his Day 2 score of 748 pinfalls was only enough for a runner-up finish. In Day 1, Percy logged 714 pinfalls and placed fifth. Rounding out the Top 3 was Robert Talavera, who joined only the Sunday contest and knocked down 745 pins.
In the Queen of the Lanes, Gloria achieved what her husband, Percy, failed to accomplish after tallying 706 and 695 pinfalls in Day 1 and 2, respectively. Gloria defeated Carol McKenzie and Yho Villavicencio. McKenzie joined only Sunday’s event and nailed 650 pinfalls, while Villavicencio’s 640 pinfalls came in the first day of the competition.
McKenzie returns to winning form In the Fiji Water Prince/Princess of the Lanes, after losing to M.J. Aldan for two straight months, Marion McKenzie regained his form, following a victory in the Sunday event.
McKenzie, who reigned in the youth contest from May to July before losing in August and September, took the October title after earning 730 pinfalls in four games.
Aldan dropped to second with his 656 pinfalls and was followed by John Taisacan (619), Nikko Gutierrez (464), Ryan Batac (408), and Madeleine Taisacan (312).
